HMH TRV Review: Is This the Best Rotary Vice for UK Fly Tyers in 2025/26?
By Rob, Founder of Yellowbelly Flytying | Last Updated: November 30, 2025
If you’ve been researching rotary fly tying vices, you’ve probably come across the HMH TRV (True Rotary Vise) more than once. It’s often called the “gold standard” for rotary vices, but is it really worth the investment for UK fly tyers? After using the HMH TRV daily in our shop and throughout our Flytying for Autism program, I’m sharing my honest, in-depth review.
Whether you’re tying your first Pheasant Tail Nymph or perfecting realistic patterns for competition, this guide will help you decide if the HMH TRV is the right vice for you.
What is the HMH TRV?
The HMH TRV is a premium true rotary fly tying vice manufactured in Maine in the USA. Unlike standard “rotary” vices that require you to loosen and reposition the hook, the TRV features genuine 360° rotation while maintaining perfect jaw alignment.

True Rotary vs. Standard Rotary: What’s the Difference?
This is crucial to understand before investing in any rotary vice.
Standard “Rotary” Vices: - Require loosening a knob to rotate the hook - Often lose alignment when rotated - Limited to specific rotation positions - Can slip during use
True Rotary (HMH TRV): - Continuous 360° rotation without loosening - Maintains perfect jaw alignment throughout rotation - Adjustable tension for your preferred resistance - Enables advanced techniques like continuous palmering and deer hair spinning
For UK patterns like North Country Spiders, Klinkhåmer Specials, and realistic nymphs, true rotary action makes a noticeable difference in tying speed and fly quality.
My Experience: 2 years with the HMH TRV
I’ve been using the HMH TRV as my primary vice for over 2 years, demonstrating and teaching at various shows in that time as well as production tying, tying everything from size 22 Zebra Midges for our local chalk streams to size 4 Woolly Buggers for reservoir trout.
What I Love
1. The Hook Hold is Unbeatable
The hardened steel jaws grip hooks with incredible security. I’ve tied hundreds of flies without a single slip, even when applying significant thread tension on small hooks. This is especially important when teaching beginners in our autism program—there’s nothing more frustrating than a hook that won’t stay put.
2. Buttery Smooth Rotation
The rotary action is genuinely smooth. When palmering hackle or inspecting a fly from all angles, the TRV rotates effortlessly. The adjustable tension lets you dial in exactly how much resistance you want, which I appreciate when tying delicate dry flies versus robust streamers.
3. Built Like a Tank
This vice is all metal—no plastic parts to crack or wear out. The weight is substantial, which means it stays put on your tying desk even when you’re working with stiff materials like bucktail or deer hair. I genuinely believe this vice will outlast me.
4. Ergonomic Adjustability
After long tying sessions (I’ve done 4-hour stretches preparing for country shows), my neck and shoulders don’t ache. The ability to adjust both height and angle means I can position the vice perfectly for my posture. This matters more than you’d think.
5. Versatility Across Hook Sizes
I’ve successfully tied on everything from size 28 midge hooks to size 2/0 pike streamers. The Jaws are rated down to size 20 but as you can see I have gone smaller. The jaws accommodate this range without any fiddling or jaw changes. For UK tyers who fish everything from small chalk stream browns to reservoir rainbows and pike, this versatility is invaluable.
What to Consider
1. The Investment
Let’s be honest—the HMH TRV isn’t cheap. It’s a significant investment compared to budget vices. However, when you calculate cost-per-year over its lifetime (which is essentially forever), it becomes more reasonable. I view it as buying your last vice.
2. The Learning Curve (Minimal)
If you’re coming from a standard vice, there’s a brief adjustment period to get used to rotary tying. However, this isn’t specific to the TRV—it’s true of any rotary vice. Most of my students adapt within their first lesson.
3. Overkill for Casual Tyers?
If you tie 5-10 flies per year, the TRV might be more vice than you need. But if you’re serious about the craft, tie regularly, or want to develop proper technique from day one, it’s absolutely worth it.
How the HMH TRV Performs with UK Patterns
Let me share how the TRV handles patterns we commonly tie for UK waters:
Dry Flies (Sizes 14-18)
Pattern: Klinkhåmer Special
The TRV excels here. The rotary action makes wrapping the thorax hackle effortless, and you can inspect the wing post from all angles without removing the fly. The secure hook hold is crucial when working with delicate CDC and thin thread.
Verdict: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
Nymphs (Sizes 12-18)
Pattern: Pheasant Tail Nymph
Wrapping the copper wire rib is beautifully smooth with true rotary action. You can rotate continuously while winding, ensuring even spacing. The weighted hook stays perfectly secure even with a tungsten bead.
Verdict: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
Wet Flies (Sizes 10-14)
Pattern: Hebridean Hackled Flies
These traditional Scottish patterns are simple but require precision. The TRV’s smooth rotation helps you wrap the soft hackle evenly, and the adjustable angle lets you position the fly perfectly for the sparse body.
Verdict: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
Streamers (Sizes 4-8)
Pattern: Woolly Bugger
Palmering hackle the full length of a size 4 Woolly Bugger is where true rotary really shines. Continuous rotation while wrapping creates perfectly even hackle spacing. The heavy base prevents tipping when working with bulky marabou.
Verdict: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
Realistic Patterns (Sizes 8-14)
Pattern: Realistic Mayfly Nymph
Complex patterns with multiple materials benefit enormously from being able to rotate and inspect from every angle. The TRV makes it easy to ensure symmetry and proportion—critical for realistic flies.
Verdict: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
HMH TRV in Our Flytying for Autism Program
One of the most rewarding aspects of using the HMH TRV is seeing how it performs in our therapeutic fly tying program for individuals on the autistic spectrum.
Why it works so well:
Predictable Operation: The smooth, consistent rotation is calming and predictable—there are no sudden slips or surprises that can cause frustration.
Secure Hook Hold: Students build confidence quickly because hooks don’t slip. This reduces anxiety and allows them to focus on learning technique.
Ergonomic Comfort: Adjustability means we can position the vice perfectly for each individual’s needs, reducing physical strain and sensory discomfort.
Quality Builds Pride: Using professional-grade tools helps students feel respected and capable. The TRV communicates that we believe in their ability to create beautiful work.
Riley, my son and co-founder, uses the HMH TRV for a lot of his tying. The smooth operation and reliable performance have been instrumental in his development as a fly tyer.
My take: The HMH TRV and top competitors are comparable in quality. Your choice may come down to availability, dealer support, and personal preference. The TRV’s reputation for customer service and longevity gives it an edge for UK tyers who want local support.
Who Should Buy the HMH TRV?
✅ Perfect For:
· Serious fly tyers who tie regularly and want professional results
· Beginners who want to invest in quality from day one and develop proper technique
· Commercial tyers who need reliability and speed
· Tyers with physical considerations who need ergonomic adjustability
· Anyone tying a wide range of patterns from midges to large streamers
· Therapeutic tyers (autism, PTSD, anxiety) who benefit from smooth, predictable operation
· Tyers who value lifetime durability and don’t want to upgrade later
❌ Probably Not For:
· Very casual tyers (5-10 flies per year) who might not use it enough to justify the cost
· Tyers on a tight budget who need to prioritize materials over tools initially
· Those who prefer non-rotary vices (some traditional tyers swear by standard vices)
Pedestal vs. C-Clamp: Which Base Should You Choose?
The HMH TRV comes with two base options:
Pedestal Base: - Sits freely on your tying desk - Easy to move and reposition - Requires more desk space - Great for portable setups or shared spaces - My choice for demonstrations and lessons
C-Clamp Base: - Attaches securely to desk edge - More permanent setup - Saves desk space - Extremely stable - Ideal for dedicated tying stations
My recommendation: Whether you have a dedicated tying space, or on the move go with the pedestal base. It is portable, sturdy and vitally important stable, this version will cover all of your needs.
Setting Up Your HMH TRV: First-Time Tips
When your TRV arrives, here’s how to get the best performance:
1. Position the Height Adjust so the hook is at eye level when you’re seated comfortably. This prevents neck strain.
2. Set the Angle Angle the vice slightly toward you (about 15-20°). This gives you a clear view of the hook point and makes threading materials easier.
3. Adjust Rotary Tension Start with medium tension. Tighten if the vice rotates too freely; loosen if it feels stiff. Personal preference varies.
4. Test Hook Hold Insert a hook and apply moderate pressure. It shouldn’t budge. If it slips, the jaws may need cleaning or slight adjustment (rare).
5. Position Your Materials Arrange thread, tools, and materials within easy reach. The TRV’s stability means you won’t knock it over reaching for bobbin or scissors.
Maintaining Your HMH TRV
One of the TRV’s best features is how little maintenance it requires:
After Each Session: - Wipe jaws with a dry cloth to remove thread wax and dubbing - Quick visual check for any material buildup
Annually: - Deep clean the jaws with isopropyl alcohol if needed - Check all adjustment knobs for tightness
Storage: - Store in a dry place (UK humidity is generally fine) - Cover with a cloth if your tying space gets dusty
That’s it. The corrosion-resistant finish and hardened steel construction mean this vice will perform flawlessly for decades with minimal care.
Common Questions About the HMH TRV
Q: Is the HMH TRV good for beginners?
Absolutely. While it’s professional-grade, the TRV is excellent for beginners who want to learn proper technique from day one. The secure hook hold prevents frustration, and you won’t need to upgrade as your skills develop. We use it successfully with complete beginners in our lessons.
Q: Can the TRV handle very small hooks (size 22-28)?
Yes. I regularly tie size 22 Zebra Midges and size 24 CDC patterns on the TRV. The hardened steel jaws grip tiny hooks securely without damaging them. This despite the Recommended minimum hooks size being size 20
Q: Will the TRV work for large pike and saltwater flies?
The TRV handles up to size 2/0, which covers most UK pike patterns and many saltwater flies. For extremely large hooks (3/0+), you’d need a specialized saltwater vice.
Q: How long will the HMH TRV last?
With proper care, essentially forever. I know professional tyers who’ve used their HMH vices daily for 20+ years without issues. The all-metal construction and quality engineering mean there’s very little that can wear out.
Q: Is it difficult to switch from a standard vice to rotary?
There’s a brief adjustment period (usually 1-2 tying sessions), but most tyers adapt quickly. The benefits—especially for ribbing, hackle, and inspection—far outweigh the short learning curve.
